What an amazing week that was for training! I stuck with the plan and rocked out each and every workout I had written down to follow in my first week of my 4 week training plan to the 1/2 Ironman on Father’s Day.
Half Ironman Training with MS Week 1
Monday: Cycled 12.26 miles then ran 3.77 miles
Tuesday: 21 Day Fix Extreme (Lower Body)–I did a separate post on the cycling from Monday and Tuesday was pretty awesome too because I LOVE the 21 Day Fix workouts. I was glad to work my lower body and cross train with some strength exercises. Cross training with strength is key to any good fitness program.
Wednesday: Ran 5.45 miles w/ PiYo upper body– I started to get the “I can skip a day and be fine” itch ALREADY on Wednesday but but but I dug deep and remembered why I even started this! I started my fitness journey to fight my MS and NOT let it punch me in the face and knock me down! It was super duper hot on Wednesday and I was so hot when running and the heat sometimes does (sometimes doesn’t) affect my MS. This day it did because it’s one of my first runs this season in the heat since our New England winter lasted ohhhhh FOREVER! 🙂 My hubby came and rescued me with my Hydrate and on I went; felt great and was so happy that I didn’t quit right then and there. MS will only control me if my mind decides to let it control me!
Thursday: Cycled 15.24 miles w/ PiYo lower body–ohhh this was an interesting day for sure! I got my first EVER flat tire 2 miles into my ride. My hubs had to pick me up (hubby to the rescue again) 🙂 I got the flat changed and went home and did Lower PiYo with my little boy. He loves to join in! I then went out for the bike ride later in the day and even though I got stuck in the rain, it felt so great!! It was so cleansing and I just felt so appreciative that I still have the ability TO ride! That ability was almost gone at one point and I will cherish every single day I have the ability to ride, run, walk…
Friday: Swam 1/4 mile and rode the bike 3.3 miles–ohhhh man oh man this was interesting. I couldn’t stop laughing at myself and my husband was getting a kick out of me too! First…this should explain a bit without me even using words:
Enough said right?!? Well let me just continue by saying that it took me 50 times longer to jump into the slimy lake than it did to actually swim (not kidding). Secondly, I was swimming with a buoy (that thing hanging between my legs yes that’s the buoy just in case you were wondering) 🙂 Swimming is HARD! I have swam before, this is not my first rodeo, but it has been a while…3 years perhaps since I have swam other than lounging in a pool. So, I’m (what I think at LEAST 10 minutes into my swim when I yell to shore (where my husband is standing with his phone ready to call 911 just in case because he can’t swim AT ALL himself)…I yell “HOW MUCH TIME?!?!?!” to which he responds “TWO MINUTES!!!” I NEARLY DIED right then and there! 2 FLIPPING minutes how can that be?!?! UGH! I LEGIT almost turned back and said, “okay well 4 minutes is better than no minutes, let’s go!” I didn’t do that…I kept going and did the 1/4 mile in 15 minutes. Not the timing I wanted to do (I wanted 30 minutes) but there was NO WAY IN HECK I was doing another out and back!
Here’s what I learned about the swim:
-The side stroke is my BEST FREAKING FRIEND!
-Leave all rings OFF when swimming. I didn’t take my wedding rings off and I was holding onto them with my thumb the ENTIRE time. (I totally could have done the swim in 8 minutes if I had that thumb!) (wink wink)
-I looked at the bottom of the lake ONCE with my goggles and FREAKED out and never looked down there again! I continuously thought about what creepy animals and slimy fishies were swimming around me…just typing it makes me shiver.
-AND you ready…I proved EXACTLY why I would never ever rent a wetsuit…EVER! Hey, when you have to go you just have to go.
Okayyyyy on to Saturday…
Saturday: Ran 6.28 miles–Another hot run (I really need to wake up earlier for these runs to avoid the heat). I did an out and back vs a loop because the Syracuse Half Ironman is an out and back half marathon. I saved a snapping turtle from death (he was in the middle of the road). He nearly bit my finger off, but I still saved him. It was hot, but again, MS or being tired and sweaty isn’t going to stop me. Great run overall and again, hubby brought me my Hydrate. (He’s my hero) 🙂
Sunday: Road the bike with my MS bike ride team up Mount Wachusett which was a tough rolling hill ride with a mountain climb half way through. It was a 2 hour ride and totaled 25.84 miles and I burned over 1100 calories. It was AWESOME! While the mileage was low, the hills were high and since one of them was a MOUNTAIN I’m pretty happy about it! I have such an amazing team (Pep’s Peddlers) and I am so blessed to have found them to ride in each 150 mile Cape Cod Getaway for MS!
You’ll notice that I didn’t take a day off this week. That was because I started on a Monday, when from now on my Monday is my rest day and I can NOT wait until tomorrow to rest.
Stay tuned for this coming week’s update! We are 21 days away from the big race! EEK!! Thank you for your support! xo

My Godsend meal every single morning; thanks to this I am fighting MS with the best nutrition I can possibly get! It will be my pre-race meal too; never go a day without it!
